OUR VISION
A C Small Maxwell & Co is a boutique accountancy firm serving the Clarence Valley and beyond.
Our aim is to be the most respected and professional accounting firm in the Clarence Valley, where our clients are our number one priority.
The firm has been in continuous operation since 1916 when it was established by Ambrose Cecil Small
AC Small Esq. travelled to Grafton to join the partnership of AE Barton, RD Bogan and AE Harrison who practiced in the Post Office Chambers, the site of the previous city library.
He remained with the partnership for two years before establishing his own firm.
In a long and detailed letter to his wife at the conclusion of the journey from Sydney to Grafton on the Pulganbar, Mr Small described the highlights of a journey that took almost two days before the mouth of the Clarence was reached with a further six and a half hours to travel up river to Grafton.
A description of each settlement from the village of Iluka, the point of transhipment from the Pulganbar to the river boat named Olns to Yamba, then as now the seaside resort of the Clarence, through Harwood, Maclean, Lawrence, Brushgrove and Ulmarra, vividly reminds readers of the growth that has occurred in the Clarence Valley.
Since the establishment of the Firm there have been several Principals and many staff who have been prominent in the community. Former Principals include Ronald T Maxwell, Peter W Beresford (who commenced the firms long standing support for the Ladies Golf May Tournament), Victor C Green, Peter Brooks, Geoff Shephard (still active in Valley affairs) and Steve Llewelyn (who ran the Maclean office). Former staff include Bob Turns who subsequently ran his own Practice for many years.
Client loyalty has been a feature of the Firm over the decades. An outstanding example of that is a client of Yamba who came to the Firm as an 18-year-old and remained a client until his death in 2009, aged 92 years.
Many of the current clients have been with the Firm decades rather than years.
AC Small would be proud of his legacy and impressed that his high ethical standards remain in place today.
OUR TEAM
Derek has been a Partner and Principal in the Firm for many years. Born in Derbyshire and initially educated in the UK (Stockport School) he completed his degree at Sydney University and was admitted as a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in 1987. Derek is particularly pleased that the high ethical standards established by A C Small when the firm commenced in 1916 continues today. Serving the community in which the firm operates has always been important to him – and this is reflected in his volunteer work – including over the years Rotary, Chamber of Commerce, Anglican Diocese Treasurer, Clarence Valley Anglican School Council and Treasurer of Bendigo Community Bank (Clarence Valley Community Financial Services Ltd).
Derek and his wife Kay are great supporters and advocates of the arts in the Clarence Valley and believe the quality of life in a country town is significantly enhanced through music, art, and literature. Currently not much time for sport – but in earlier years Derek played representative soccer in the UK and then for Sydney University with Tennis also being important. Derek has twin daughters Kate and Sarah and four grandchildren.
